How this works and common questions

About this tool

This counter measures the text you type on this page. It counts words, characters, SMS segments, and two common length limits. Nothing is stored or sent.

How it works

A word is a group of characters separated by spaces or line breaks. Characters are Unicode characters, after spaces at the start or end are left out. SMS uses the GSM-7 alphabet when every character is in it: 160 units in one segment, then 153 units each. An extension character such as € counts as two units. Any other character switches the whole message to Unicode: 70 units, then 67. An emoji can count as two Unicode units.

Rules

The title limit is 60 characters. The description limit is 155 characters. "Invoice due Friday." is 3 words, 19 characters, and 17 characters without spaces. It is 1 GSM-7 segment. It is within both limits. Nothing you type is stored or sent.

Questions

How are words and characters counted?

Words are separated by spaces or line breaks. "Invoice due Friday." is 3 words and 19 characters, or 17 without spaces. Spaces at the start or end are left out.

How are SMS segments counted?

GSM-7 fits 160 characters in one segment, then 153 per segment. 161 GSM characters are 2 segments. 306 are 2 segments. 307 are 3. If any character is outside that alphabet, Unicode is used: 70, then 67. € counts as two GSM units. A character such as ê uses Unicode.

What title and description limits are used?

A title at 60 characters or fewer is within the title limit. A description at 155 characters or fewer is within the description limit. The comparison uses the character count of the text you typed.
