How this works and common questions

About this tool

This calculator rounds one total the way Canadian cash is rounded now that the penny is gone. Debit, credit, and other electronic payments stay at the exact cent. Nothing is stored.

How it works

The penny is no longer used for cash in Canada, so a cash total rounds to the nearest 5 cents. Look at the last cent of the total. 1 and 2 round down. 3 and 4 round up to 5. 6 and 7 round down to 5. 8 and 9 round up to the next 10. 0 and 5 do not move. Debit, credit, and other electronic payments keep the exact cent.

Rules

Round the final total only. Do not round each line and then add. $10.02 in cash is $10.00. $10.03 in cash is $10.05. $10.07 in cash is $10.05. $10.08 in cash is $10.10. The same total paid electronically stays $10.02, $10.03, $10.07, or $10.08. Verify with the official source.

Questions

How does $10.02 round in cash?

The last digit is 2, so it rounds down. Cash is $10.00. An electronic payment stays $10.02. The difference is -$0.02.

How do 3¢, 4¢, 8¢, and 9¢ round?

3¢ and 4¢ round up to 5¢, so $10.03 and $10.04 become $10.05 in cash. 8¢ and 9¢ round up to the next 10¢, so $10.08 and $10.09 become $10.10 in cash.

Are debit and credit rounded?

No. Electronic payments stay at the exact cent. Only the cash total rounds to the nearest 5 cents. Verify with the official source.
