How this works and common questions
About this tool
This calculator takes the bill and tip percent you type, rounds the tip to the cent, and splits the total. Nothing is stored.
How it works
The tip is the bill times the tip percent, divided by 100, rounded half up to the cent. The total is the bill plus the tip. That total is divided by the number of people. Leftover cents are added one cent at a time, so some people pay one cent more.
Rules
A 0% tip leaves the total equal to the bill. $100.00 at 15% is a $15.00 tip and a $115.00 total. Split 4 ways, each person pays $28.75. Nothing you type is stored or sent.
Questions
How is a 15% tip on $100 worked out?
100.00 times 15, divided by 100, is 15.00. The tip is $15.00 and the total is $115.00.
How is $115.00 split 4 ways?
115.00 divided by 4 is 28.75 exactly. Each person pays $28.75.
What if the total does not divide evenly?
The leftover cents are handed out one at a time. $100.00 at 18% is an $18.00 tip and a $118.00 total. Split 3 ways, 1 person pays $39.34 and 2 people pay $39.33.
