How this works and common questions
About this tool
This calculator compares a starting value with an ending value. The percent uses the starting value. You type both figures. Nothing is stored.
How it works
Subtract the start from the end. Divide that difference by the absolute value of the start, then multiply by 100. A larger end is an increase. A smaller end is a decrease. Equal values are no change.
Rules
Both values are 0 or more. If both are 0, the change is 0%. If the start is 0 and the end is not, there is no percent to show. The page never shows infinity. Nothing you type is stored or sent.
Questions
How is the percent from 80 to 100 worked out?
The difference is 20. 20 divided by the start, 80, is 0.25. Times 100, that is an increase of 25.00%.
Why is 100 down to 80 a 20% decrease?
The percent uses the starting value. The difference is 20, and 20 divided by 100 is 20.00%, a decrease.
What if the start is zero?
If both values are zero, the change is 0%. If the start is zero and the end is not, this tool does not invent a percent. Enter a start above zero.
Do I need an account?
No. The tools work without one. You only need to sign in to save your work.
Is what I type saved?
No. Nothing is saved unless you sign in and choose Save. Otherwise it stays on the page.
Do you show ads or sell my information?
No. We show no ads and we do not sell your information.
Is this tax or legal advice?
