How this works and common questions

About this tool

Each tax uses the rate on the form and the amount before tax. A simple estimate, not advice. Nothing you type leaves this device.

How it works

Add tax multiplies the amount by each rate and rounds half up to the cent. The taxes are not stacked: each one uses the amount before tax. Remove tax divides by one plus the sum of the rates, then uses the same split. A leftover cent goes on the last tax so the parts add up to the amount you typed. 100.00 with one rate of 13 percent is 13.00 of tax and a total of 113.00.

Rules

Choosing a province fills starting rates you can edit. The result uses the rates on the form. Verify with the official source. This is a simple estimate, not advice.

Questions

Does this add tax or take it out?

Choose Add tax to start from a before-tax amount, or Remove tax to start from an amount that already includes the taxes. Each tax is calculated on the before-tax amount.

Can I change the rate?

Yes. Choosing a province fills starting rates you can edit. The result uses the rates on the form.

How are the cents rounded?

Each tax is rounded half up to the cent. On a tax-included amount, a leftover cent goes on the last tax so the parts add up to the amount you typed.
