How this works and common questions
About this tool
Posts sit at both ends and at each spacing. Boards cover each section, including a shorter last section. Prices are added only when you type them. Post, rail and board prices are used only when you type them. This page does not include material prices.
How it works
Sections are the length divided by the spacing, rounded up when the last piece is shorter. Posts are the sections plus one. Rails are the sections times the rail rows you type. Boards are enough boards and gaps to cover each section, rounded up.
Rules
The page does not convert feet to metres. A zero length, zero spacing, or zero board width is rejected. A gap of 0 is allowed. Negative numbers are rejected. Counts stay whole numbers.
Questions
How are posts counted?
One at each end, and one at every spacing. A 24 foot fence at 8 foot spacing has 4 posts.
How are boards counted?
Boards are counted per section, then added. That can be higher than one continuous run along the whole fence. A shorter last section is counted on its own.
Are material prices included?
Only when you type a price. Otherwise the page shows the counts and no cost.
Do I need an account?
No. The tools work without one. You only need to sign in to save your work.
Is what I type saved?
No. Nothing is saved unless you sign in and choose Save. Otherwise it stays on the page.
